# Is Cubbit’s object storage sustainable?

Compared to traditional object storage solutions, which are based on data centers, Cubbit is greener.

This is due to three main factors:

- Cubbit recycles unused on-prem resources: to join the Cubbit network, you can use energy-efficient Cubbit nodes or recycle your unused on-prem storage capacity.
- Cubbit does not own or operate a data center, therefore there’s nothing that needs to be powered and cooled down. Instead, Cubbit runs on a geo-distributed network of energy-efficient devices.
- Cubbit can optimize the geographical location of distributed files so that stored shards are close to the owner.

These three factors combined reduce your energy consumption by 25 tons of CO2 for every PB you store yearly.
